Although apparently not a member of SoWP, cartoonist Al Merrikin was a ship Radio Officer and his cartoons like those above appeared in Society publications. Sadly, on March 27, 1971, Merrikin’s ship, the S.S. Texaco Oklahoma, broke in half in a storm off Cape Hatteras, and he was among the 31 people killed. His work was in the finest tradition of wireless operators and his name is engraved in the Wireless Operators Memorial in Battery Park, New York.
